Wood Fired Tea Bowl from Anagama Kiln – "The Strength of Imperfection"
This unique tea bowl is a testament to the dialogue between the artist’s hand and the primal power of fire. Crafted without a potter’s wheel, this chawan was formed using ancient Japanese techniques, relying only on clay, wooden scrapers, and my own hands.
The Fire's Kiss: A Story of Resilience During the intense, high-heat environment of the Anagama wood-firing process, this chawan underwent a natural transformation. Under the immense pressure and extreme temperature, the base of the bowl slightly yielded and settled.
Can something so "damaged" be beautiful? In the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the answer is a resounding yes. This subtle deformation of the foot is not a flaw; it is the physical memory of the fire’s power and the clay’s surrender. It makes the bowl truly unique—a point where my hand-forming ends and the kiln's spirit takes over. It stands as a testament to the fact that true beauty often carries the marks of the struggle.
Surface & Texture The kiln has blessed this chawan with a rare and complex surface. Its tones—ranging from deep, smoky browns to warm ochres and subtle golden streaks—closely resemble Susutake, the classic Japanese color of "smoked bamboo." As Susutake is created by time and nature, each shade on this bowl is one-of-a-kind.
You can still feel my fingerprints on the sides—the true signature of the hand-forming process in my workshop.
